In a prestigious location overlooking the Bedford Basin, Royale Hemlocks maintains a modern portfolio of home designs reflecting the distinct character of our maritime heritage. Expansive porches and soaring rooflines, characteristic of Victorian exteriors, artfully compliment the latest technologies and family conveniences.
Mysterious and romantic, Hemlock Ravine Park is the site of Halifax's most enduring love story. When Edward, the Duke of Kent, arrived in Halifax in 1794 to serve as commander in chief of the Halifax Garrison, he was accompanied by his French mistress; Julie St. Laurent. He built an elaborate estate for her overlooking the shore of the Basin. The tiny, elegant music rotunda perched on the hill between the water and the Bedford Highway, and the graceful pathways leading from Julie's heart shaped pond, through the towering old hemlock trees to Royale Hemlocks can still be seen today. In 1800 Edward returned to England where he surrendered to the pressures of royal responsibility, dutifully marrying a German princess and later fathering Queen Victoria.
